Talked to a painter in Sacramento who said he charges extra for our bad seams, and it made me mad

Just sanded them down myself before calling the next guy.

My buddy's deck last year was the same deal. I used to think sanding was just prep work, but seeing how much longer the stain held up changed my mind.

Honestly, saying "our bad seams" feels like he's calling you out for something that's just normal wear in a house. Ngl, seams can crack or pull apart over time, especially in places like Sacramento where it gets hot and dry. But I get why that rubbed you the wrong way, it's not like you built the walls shoddy on purpose. Tbh, a lot of painters will try to upsell you on "prep work" that's just basic stuff they should include. Maybe ask the next guy straight up if seam repair is part of the quote or extra, so there's no surprises.
