Cutterhead speed matters more than most guys think on soft ground

Been watching guys on my crew run the cutterhead way too fast in mud. Just throws everything into suspension. Slowed ours down to about 12 rpm last week in a silty spot near Baton Rouge and doubled our production. Anyone else notice this or is it just me?

Has anybody checked the torque readings when you drop the speed that much? I've seen some rigs actually burn up seals from the extra strain even if the production looks better.

I read a tech article once that said low speed high torque can cook seals.

Five rigs in my shop last year said yes, @wendya391.
