Spotted a wild detail on an old bridge drawing at the county records office last Tuesday
I was digging through old files for a project in Chattanooga and found a 1947 bridge plan where the original drafter hand-drew every single rivet in a way that would take me a full day in CAD - has anyone else run across old-school drafting that made you feel like a slacker?

Bet those old-timers knew they were building something that had to last a hundred years, not just pass inspection for a five-year warranty. Hand-drawing every rivet like that was their way of showing they took ownership of the design from start to finish. Makes you wonder if our shortcuts today are really saving time or just kicking problems down the road for someone else to figure out.

Right, but do you think that level of detail actually made the bridge safer, or was it just about pride in the craft?
