That $8 tube of silicone caulk cost me 6 hours of my life

I tried to re-caulk my bathroom sink in Portland because the old stuff was peeling. Watched a 3 minute video, figured it would take 30 minutes tops. But I didn't realize you have to completely remove the old caulk first, get the surface bone dry, and tape everything off. Six hours later my hands smelled like vinegar and I still had gaps. Anyone else find this job way harder than it looks?

That $8 tube of silicone caulk cost me 6 hours of my life" and a complete crisis of confidence in my own basic handyman skills. I spent an hour just scraping and picking at old caulk like it was some kind of archeological dig. By hour four I was just staring at the sink wondering if I could just move and leave it for the next person.

I read that old caulk removal is the actual hardest part, so @the_wren you're not alone in that struggle.
