I was using a flathead screwdriver on a Phillips head screw for years

My neighbor in Phoenix saw me struggling and asked why I didn't just use the right bit. I felt like an idiot. What's a simple tool mistake you made for way too long?

Believe it or not, I used a butter knife as a flathead screwdriver for the better part of a decade. I just thought all my screws were cheap and stripped easily. My wife finally bought me a basic tool set for my birthday, and I was stunned at how easily the proper driver turned the same screws. I felt a profound mix of relief and shame.

What finally made you try the butter knife in the first place? It's interesting how we just accept a frustrating workaround as normal, especially when we don't have the right tool handy. That relief when you finally find the proper solution is a universal feeling.
