Rant: I dropped $200 on a 'global' SIM card plan and it's been a total disaster.

It barely works in half the countries I've been to this month, and the data speed is a joke. Anyone else have a mobile setup that actually works across Southeast Asia?

What did you expect for a single plan covering that many places? I used a regional SIM in Thailand and Vietnam last year and it was fine, but trying to get one card for everywhere is asking for trouble. The networks are just too different. Maybe split it up and buy local SIMs as you go, it's cheaper and you actually get service.

Why not just grab local SIMs as you hop around during your trip?

I used to swear by those all-in-one travel SIMs too, until a trip to Cambodia left me totally offline for two days. Now I just grab a cheap local SIM at each airport, and it's way more reliable. The extra ten minutes is worth not dealing with spotty coverage.
