Changed my mind on using cheap oil filters after a rebuild job last month

I used to think all filters were basically the same, just grab whatever is cheapest. Then I had a customer's 6.7 Powerstroke come back with a tick in the lifters after 5k miles on a budget oil change. Cut the old filter open and found metal shavings caught in the media. The good filter I normally use would have caught that stuff. Has anyone else had a cheap filter let something through they regretted later?

Yo I feel this hard. Those cheap filters with the cardboard end caps are straight up garbage. I had a buddy's 5.3 Chevy eat a cam because the filter collapsed and bypassed all the time. Never again, I only run Wix or Motorcraft now, the extra 5 bucks is nothing compared to a new motor.

Watching that 5.3 eat itself had to be rough. I switched to Wix after a Fram filter let go on my old Ford and clogged up the oil cooler lines. That was a mess to flush out, took forever to get all the bits of filter media and glue out of the system. Now I just buy filters by the case online when they're on sale, keeps the cost down without having to gamble on no-name junk.

Learned that lesson the hard way too, never skimp on filters now.
