Changed my mind about using synthetic oil in my old Cummins
My buddy Mike who runs a shop in Fort Worth told me to switch to synthetic at 300k miles. Said it would clean out sludge and help with cold starts. Did it last month and my oil pressure gauge reads way better now. Anyone else had good results switching an older engine over?

Yea I heard synthetic is way better at preventing sludge buildup in older motors. Read somewhere that conventional oil leaves deposits over time that synthetic actually breaks down and carries away. Makes sense your oil pressure picked up since the passages are probably cleaner now. Just keep an eye on it for the first couple thousand miles in case any gunk gets loose.

Kinda sounds like a high stakes game of "will the engine fall apart or get better?" Hope yours is a winner instead of a ticking time bomb.

My buddy's old Chevy had the same thing happen back in 2019 after he switched to synthetic at 140k miles. Ran quiet for about three weeks then blew a rear main seal because all that crud was the only thing holding it together. You really never know what kind of time bomb you're sittin' on with those older engines.
