Chatting with a guy who used to run a print shop on Michigan Avenue

He was telling me how he gave up his 2,000 square foot spot in 2015 because the rent kept going up and foot traffic died. I always thought those empty storefronts were just a sign of things getting worse, but he said it was more about old leases and owners waiting for a big payday that never came. It made me look at those blocks differently, like maybe the problem isn't just people not wanting to be there. Anyone else have a story that changed how you see a certain part of town?

Yeah, my own garage is basically that. Been "about to clean it out for a yard sale" for three years now. Guess I'm just a small time version of those building owners, waiting on my own big score from a pile of old junk.

Feel like that's a bit different though.

That part about owners waiting for a payday. Reminds me of this old diner spot near me. Sat empty for years cause the family that owned the building kept saying they had a deal with some chain restaurant. Never happened. Just weeds now.
