A guy at the gym said he only counts the days he shows up, and it got me thinking about how I track my own wins
I was at the gym on Tuesday and this older guy next to me on the bikes said something that stuck. He said he keeps a note on his phone and every night he adds one line about something he did that day, no matter how small. I looked at mine and I had 4 blank days in a row because I kept waiting for something big. So I started doing his thing this week, just one line a night. Monday was "finished the paperwork I'd been putting off for 3 weeks." Tuesday was "called my sister back." Last night was "went to bed by 9:30." It sounds dumb but seeing 3 lines instead of 3 blanks feels way better. Does anyone else keep a list like this, or do you just hold it in your head?
Kept a list like that for about two months last year and honestly it stopped helping after a while. The problem for me was that I started writing down junk just to avoid a blank line, like "did the dishes" when I do that every single day anyway. Once the bar got that low the whole thing felt fake and I quit. The gym guy's version works because it's just for him, but the second you're doing it to keep a streak alive instead of to actually notice something, it turns into another chore.
