Why does everyone at the crosswalk ignore the little countdown timer?

I waited 90 seconds at the corner of 5th and Main today and watched six people start crossing with only 4 seconds left on the clock. They all ended up stuck in the middle of the road when the light changed, which made the right-turn cars honk like crazy. Is there some unwritten rule that the timer is just a suggestion, or am I the only one who treats it like a hard deadline?

Honestly ignore that timer at your own risk. I've watched people sprint and still get stranded because they thought they could beat it. The crosswalk timer is the closest thing we have to a traffic law that actually makes sense. Treat it like a countdown on a bomb, not a countdown on a microwave. Trust me, the horn symphony you cause is not worth the 30 seconds you save. Ngl, those people are the reason I always wait for the next full cycle.
