Drew my dog every night for 30 days and the first one still makes me laugh
Back in March I got it in my head that I would draw my dog Rufus once a night before bed, just a quick sketch, nothing fancy. First week was rough, he looked like a melted loaf of bread with legs, and I almost quit on day 4. Around day 12 something clicked with how I blocked out his ears and suddenly he actually looked like a dog. By day 30 I filled a whole cheap notebook I got at the drugstore for $3. What got me was flipping back to page one, because that ugly first drawing still makes me smile more than the good ones at the end. I think I got worse at copying him exactly but better at catching the goofy way he tilts his head when he wants a treat. Now I do a doodle of whatever is on my desk instead, and last week it was a half eaten bagel that came out way better than Rufus ever did. Anyone else ever look back at their early sketches and kinda miss the messy ones?
Honestly the messy ones aren't some secret treasure, they're just bad drawings and that's fine. The bagel coming out better than Rufus ever did tells you the practice worked, so keeping the ugly page one on a pedestal kind of undersells how much you actually improved. Maybe it's just me but the early sketches are proof you showed up, not something worth missing.
