Doodled my lunch on a receipt with a ballpoint pen and it beat the fancy sketchbook I bought in Savannah
I've been carrying this $28 hardcover sketchbook I grabbed at a shop in Savannah for like 4 months and it turns out I'm scared of it. Every time I open it I freeze up because the paper feels too nice to mess up. Then last Thursday I was waiting on my sandwich at this deli near my office and I had nothing to do so I started doodling my fries and pickle on the back of the receipt with a cheap ballpoint pen. It came out loose and goofy but way more alive than anything in the sketchbook, and I actually liked looking at it. The pen skipped a little and the paper was that thin receipt paper that curls up, but somehow that made me stop caring and just draw. I've done 9 of these receipt doodles now and taped them on my fridge and they look better than the 3 sad drawings in the nice book. So now the sketchbook just sits there mocking me from the shelf, which honestly feels backwards. Anyone else find that the cheap surface frees you up, or am I just psyching myself out with nice paper?
