My brother's advice to grind finer was backwards for my setup

He swore my espresso was sour because I needed a finer grind, but my Baratza was already choking the machine, so I went coarser and the 20 second shot finally balanced out, anyone else find that the standard troubleshooting tips just don't fit their gear?
