That one Tuesday shift broke me

Worked retail for 8 years. Most days are just... whatever. But this one Tuesday last October. Oh man. We had a 60% off coupon glitch in the system. The line wrapped around the store. Three registers only. Lady screamed at me because her total was $12.38 not $12.37. Another guy threw a pack of socks at my coworker. By hour six I just stood there smiling blankly. My manager hid in the back for two hours. I still get flashbacks when I see clearance signs. Anyone else have a shift that just made you question everything?

My buddy Mark worked at a Best Buy for like 5 years and he told me about this one shift that broke him too. Black Friday morning, they had a doorbuster deal on a cheap laptop and the line started forming at 4am. By the time they opened, there was a crowd of maybe 200 people pushing against the doors. One dude climbed over a display table to grab the last unit and knocked over a whole shelf of printers. Mark had to stand there and tell everyone they were out of stock while this guy just stood there holding the laptop like he won a trophy. He said he just stared at the ceiling tiles for a solid five minutes after that. He quit two weeks later and never went back to retail.

Pile onto that story by adding how those ceiling tiles probably saw more action that day than the whole sales floor... @grantmartinez really nailed it with the image of Mark just zoning out like that, because retail burnout hits different when you're trapped between angry customers and corporate pressure. The way he quit two weeks later says everything about how that one moment just crystallized all the nonsense you put up with in those jobs.
