Hit my 1000th customer complaint at the drive thru last week and it got me thinking
Ngl I work at a busy fast food place near the highway and last Thursday I logged my 1000th complaint since starting there two years ago. Most of them are dumb stuff like cold fries or someone wanting a refund because they changed their mind after eating half the burger. But what really got me is that I remembered every single one of those complaints for the first few months and let them ruin my whole shift. Now I just nod and say sorry and move on because 90% of them are from people having a bad day who take it out on me. The real milestone that surprised me was realizing I stopped caring around complaint number 400. Has anyone else hit a weird number like that where your whole attitude just flipped?

Hit that 400 number and realized the same thing myself, it's like a switch flips in your brain. The complaints stop being personal attacks and turn into background noise, just part of the job like wiping counters or counting cash. What really got me was noticing how many of those complaints came from people who obviously had something else going on, like a screaming kid in the backseat or a phone glued to their ear. Once you frame it that way, it's almost funny how predictable it gets, you can guess which customer is about to complain before they even open their mouth. Makes me wonder how long it takes most people in customer service to hit that same wall.

Figured out what tipped you off that you stopped caring? Like was there one specific complaint that just broke the camel's back or did you catch yourself mid-nod and realize you weren't even listening. That switch thing is real but I'm curious what the trigger was for you specifically. Most people I've talked to say it happens around the same number range but nobody ever says what the actual moment felt like.

Wait wait wait, you're telling me you REMEMBERED the first 400 complaints word for word? That's insane lol. I would've lost my mind way before that, like probably around complaint number 50 when some guy screamed at me about his burger being "too wet" lmao. That flipping point at 400 is wild though, you basically trained your brain to just block out the noise like a superpower or something. I remember hitting my wall around 300 when I realized I could predict exactly what people were gonna say before they even rolled down their window.
