Had to pick between the $3 and the $12 part for a customer's dryer fix

Guy wanted me to fix his dryer with the cheapest belt I could find. I told him the $12 OEM one would last 3 years versus the $3 knockoff lasting maybe 6 months. He chose the cheap one and called me back 4 months later when it snapped. Has anyone else had customers insist on saving a few bucks only to cost themselves more in the long run?

My buddy Marvin did the same thing with his lawnmower. Bought the $8 carburetor instead of the $35 one I told him to get. Thing flooded out every time he used it. He spent more time cleaning the spark plug than actually mowing. Finally bought the right part after three weekends of that nonsense. Sometimes cheap just means you pay twice.

@alice269 knows the struggle. 4 months is rough though, I'd have bet money it lasted at least 6. You ever come right out and tell someone they're being penny wise and pound foolish, or do you just let them learn the hard way?

Ha! Yeah @alice269 nailed it. Cheap is just expensive with extra steps and a few more curse words thrown in. I watched my neighbor "save" $12 on a refrigerator water filter from some random brand on Amazon and three weeks later his ice maker sounded like a dying cat. Took him two service calls and a new ice maker assemble to figure out he should have just bought the OEM part up front. Sometimes you gotta let people learn the hard way though, saves you from hearing them complain you were right.
