That old ironworker named Red in Pittsburgh told me to never trust a shiny sling

I figured he was just grumpy until a brand new cable snapped on lift number 4 and that dulled out nylon webbing held the backup load, has anyone else had an old timer's weird safety rule actually save a job?

Man, I used to roll my eyes so hard at old timers like that. Thought they were just being paranoid about nothing, like some weird superstition from a bygone era. Then I had a brand new choker snap on a lift while the old beat up sling we were using as a tag line held the whole thing. Totally changed my mind, now I listen to every grumpy piece of advice I hear on site.

Noticing the same pattern outside work too, like how my grandpa always told me to keep my tires properly inflated and I'd brush it off until I blew a tire on the highway doing 70. Now I check that stuff every month without fail, and it's wild how often the simple boring advice turns out to be the stuff that actually saves your bacon. Makes you wonder how many other "old timer" tips we're ignoring that could keep us out of trouble.
