That $400 'smart' hard hat with the built-in comms was a total joke

Battery died halfway through a 10-hour pour in Phoenix and the mic picked up more wind than my voice. Anyone have a real radio setup that actually works up there?

Motorola CP200s with the over-ear mics. They clip to your hard hat strap and last a full shift, even in that heat.

Over-ear mics are just more gear to break.

Wait, are we really pretending durability is the only thing that matters with radio gear? I get that CP200s are tough, but @gavin692 has a point about over-ear mics - they do add another point of failure. But nobody's talking about how those mics actually save your neck and shoulders from fatigue over a 12 hour shift. Having the speaker right at your ear lets you run the volume way lower, which means less strain on your hearing long term. Plus in noisy environments, that little mic tube keeps your voice from picking up all the wind and background noise. So yeah, they might break eventually, but the tradeoff for comfort and audio clarity is worth it for me.
