Signal flags vs hand signals, the radio died on a Norfolk job

Back when I started on the docks in Norfolk, we used signal flags for everything. One windy morning, my flag wrapped around the line and I spent ten minutes trying to shake it loose while the hook swung over a pile of rebar. Now I run with a two-way radio and a spotter, but last week the battery died mid-lift and I had to fall back on old habits. Funny how the ancient method saved my hide, but I still keep a backup flag in the cab just in case. Anyone else rely on a backup system that feels outdated until it's the only thing that works?

Ten minutes for a flag? That rebar hook would've had me sweating through my boots.
