Pro tip: The new salon on Main Street in Springfield is doing something I don't agree with
I walked past the new 'Gloss & Glam' place downtown last Friday and saw their whole front window is full of those single-use, pre-cut foil packets for highlights. They must have hundreds of them on display. I counted at least 30 different colors. I get that it looks neat and modern, but it's so much waste. In my 15 years behind the chair, I've never seen a shop push that much disposable plastic for a basic service. It feels like a step back for our trade, focusing on flash over function. Has anyone else seen this trend in their area, and do you think clients actually care about the packaging?

Yeah, that part about "so much waste" really hits home. I read an article a while back about how the beauty industry creates a crazy amount of plastic trash, and salons are a big part of that. Seeing a whole window full of single use packets just feels like they're bragging about it. It might look clean to some clients, but you're right, it's a step back. We should be finding ways to use less, not more, of that stuff.

But that's exactly why the single use packets make sense in a salon. Cross contamination is a real issue, and using from a big tub for multiple clients is how you spread things like lice or skin infections. The waste is bad, sure, but it's the cost of running a clean, safe space. They're not bragging, they're showing they take hygiene seriously. The fix needs to come from the companies making the stuff in better packaging, not from the stylists trying to do their job right.

I guess I just see that as a hygiene thing, not something to be proud of.
