Update: A painter in Boise said he bids jobs by the gallon, not the square foot
I was standing in line behind him at the supply house on Fairview last Tuesday and he said he can guess a whole repaint within 2 gallons before he ever walks the rooms. I tried it on a 2,100 square foot rental in Meridian and came within a quart of what I actually used. Anyone else price paint this way, or do you still measure every wall?
The gallon thing sounds nuts until you actually try it. I did the same test on a duplex I repaint every few years and guessed 11 gallons before I even pulled out the tape. Came in at 11 and a half, which for me is basically dead on. What got me was how much the ceiling height and number of coats mess with your head, because a guy can be way off if he forgets the primer. I still walk the rooms and count the doors and windows, but I write the gallon number down first and it keeps me honest. Measuring tape has its place, don't get me wrong, but after enough places you start to feel it in your gut. The Boise painter might be onto something most of us already do without saying it out loud.
