Caulk gun choice nearly tanked a whole basement finish

Picked a cheap drippy caulk gun for the trim work in a 900 sq ft basement, ended up with smears everywhere and had to redo 3 corners with a $60 professional model. Anyone else found that spending on the gun saves more time than buying the fancy caulk itself?

I've used a $12 caulk gun for probably ten different jobs and never had drips that bad. A little acetone and a steady hand fixes most smears before they dry, so a full redo sounds like the problem was speed or angle more than the tool. The $60 model is nice, but it's a convenience purchase, not a lifeline.
