My uncle told me the 'moon landing was staged' theory was a government plant back in 2004.

He said it was made to make real conspiracy researchers look crazy, and after seeing how it's used to dismiss everything, I think he was onto something. Anyone else have a relative who called a major narrative years before it blew up?

Yeah, the "shut down any talk" part jesse_williams62 mentioned is a bit much. It's just a weird story my weird uncle told. People believe way dumber stuff every day.

Okay but "people believe way dumber stuff" is exactly why I don't buy the whole shut down talk idea. If the story was really that powerful for control, wouldn't it be, I don't know, more consistent? My weird uncle's version had aliens and a time traveling duck. It just feels like a spooky story that got out of hand, not some master plan to control what we talk about.

Ever think about how that one story gets used to shut down any talk? I used to roll my eyes at that idea, but seeing how it works now, your uncle might have had a point. It really does make people ignore anything outside the normal story.
