Why does nobody warn you about static discharge on server racks?

I was installing a new drive in a Dell PowerEdge last week and touched the chassis frame, got a shock that locked up the whole system. Turns out the floor mat wasn't grounded properly, and I fried the backplane. Has anyone else had a build fail because of a basic grounding issue?

Learn from my screw up: ground everything, even if you think it's fine. Double check that floor mat connection with a multimeter before you touch anything expensive. Saved me from repeating the same mistake on a second chassis last month, have you ever tested your grounding setup before a build?

Read an EEVblog post about this @the_anthony, grounded everything first time after that.

Holy crap, you didn't test the floor mat before touching the chassis? That's the kind of thing that gives me nightmares. A whole backplane fried because of a lazy connection, that's brutal. Makes me double check every little thing now.
