My bus driver took the backroads and saved 18 minutes last Wednesday
I take the 42 bus from downtown to the east side every day, usually a 45 minute slog. Last Wednesday the driver just veered off the main route without warning, cutting through some residential streets near the old mill. We hit zero red lights and pulled into my stop 18 minutes early. I asked him if he was allowed to do that and he just shrugged and said 'been doing it for years.' Anyone else have a driver who ignores the official route and makes things better?

Wait, you're telling me bus drivers out there actually have secret shortcuts? I used to think following the route was like a law or something and drivers were just stuck with it. But after hearing this, I totally get why someone would take the backroads if it shaves off that much time. Did the other passengers seem surprised too, or was it just you? I'm honestly jealous of that ride, my driver sticks to the main roads no matter what.

@mila_harris naw you're not alone, some drivers are total legends with shortcuts. The regulars probably knew what was up but the newbies looked confused for a sec. Honestly jealous too, sounds way better than crawling through gridlock.
