PSA: my $9 tamper destroyed my espresso shots until I tried a $40 one

Spent 6 months fighting sour pulls with a cheap plastic tamper at my kitchen counter in Austin, then borrowed a friend's calibrated steel one and my extraction time dropped from 18 seconds to 27, has anyone else hit this ceiling with budget gear or am I just late to the party?
