My pour-over routine got a total rework after a chat with my neighbor
I ran into this older guy named Frank at the park last Sunday while I was walking my dog. He saw my thermos and asked what I was drinking, so I told him about my whole process with the V60 and the fancy scale I use. He just laughed and said I was overthinking it, that his wife has been making him coffee with a $15 Mr. Coffee for 30 years and it's always perfect. At first I felt a little defensive, but then he told me the secret is just using fresh beans and not letting the water sit on the grounds too long. That really hit me because I've been obsessing over water temperature and bloom times, but I never once asked myself if the coffee actually tasted good. So this week I stripped it down to just hot water, good beans, and a simple timer, and honestly it tastes better than half the fancy recipes I tried. Has anyone else had a moment where someone totally outside the hobby made you rethink your whole approach?

Yeah isnt it wild how sometimes the simplest advice comes from someone who doesnt even think about the hobby? I had a similar moment when my buddy's mom just shrugged and said "its just coffee, not rocket science" and it totally made me relax about timing everything to the second. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the gear and rules that we forget to actually enjoy what we're making lol.

Hearing that from someone outside the hobby really does put things in perspective, I love that. It's so easy to get hyperfocused on the tiny details and forget it's supposed to be fun.
