Had to choose between an espresso machine and a French press for my tiny apartment kitchen

I moved into a new place last month with counter space the size of a cutting board. Tossed and turned for three nights trying to decide between a $200 De'Longhi machine or a simple $35 Bodum press. Went with the press since I could stash it in a cabinet when not in use. First cup came out great, but now I'm grinding beans on the floor with a hand grinder because my outlet is behind the fridge. Anyone else deal with coffee gear in a super cramped space?

First cup came out great" but then you mentioned grinding on the floor - did the press actually hold up or are you already eyeing that De'Longhi again?

Wait, did your buddy actually try grinding beans on a dirty floor then pour that into a French press? Honestly, that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, especially if you want a clean cup. Tbh, I know a guy who tried that once, he was camping and thought it would be fine. He ended up with gritty, muddy coffee and a press that got scratched up from tiny rocks on the ground. Ngl, he said the press held up okay for a while but it never felt right after, like it was always letting through more sediment. He ditched it after a month and went back to a basic drip machine because he got tired of the hassle. So yeah, your friend might be better off just saving for that De'Longhi now before he deals with that mess any longer.

And that scratches letting through more sediment would drive me absolutely crazy, no way I'd stick with that press long term.
