A guy at my local cafe tried to convince me his 'espresso' was just instant coffee with hot tap water
This happened last Tuesday at Brew & Bean in the city. I was waiting for my pour-over and this older guy next to me was telling his friend about his 'home setup'. He said, and I quote, 'I save a fortune, I just use a spoon of the cheap instant stuff and run the hot water from the sink over it, same thing really.' His friend just nodded along! I almost choked on my sample cup of cold brew. It took everything I had not to say something. Has anyone else overheard a coffee take that made you just stop and stare?

Used to think instant was fine until I tried real espresso from a proper machine. That bitter sludge from a spoon is a crime against coffee.

Witnessed a similar tragedy at the grocery store where a man argued that store brand instant was basically the same as my whole beans. Had to just walk away. I guess if your taste buds are dead, @robinson.hannah, you can save a lot of money. Some people just enjoy their hot brown water and we have to let them live in peace, however wrong they are.
