Why I gave up on tool presets for tricky parts... my old way was actually wrong
For two years I kept making tool presets on the machine for short runs of weird stock, like that 4140 hex bar job we get every month. I thought it was faster, but last Tuesday I had three crashes in one shift because I forgot to clear a stale preset offset from the last operator's shift. A senior guy finally showed me his method, writing the numbers on a dry erase board by the control and inputting fresh each time, even for a 20 minute job. It takes maybe 90 extra seconds but I haven't scrapped a part since, and that's what convinced me. Has anyone else had better luck with paper notes over the soft key presets, or am I the last one to switch?
