A mold maker in Ohio made me rethink my tool offsets

Last week I was running a repeat job and fighting with a 0.004 inch offset drift, and this old timer from a mold shop across town said I was measuring the part, not the process. He showed me how he tracks spindle load on every pass and logs it, so he catches wear before the part goes bad, not after. Anyone else log spindle load numbers or is that overkill for smaller shops like mine?
