Turns out my local library has a tool rental program I never knew about

I was venting to the librarian about my broken drill and she just pointed to a shelf with power tools. Saved me $60 on a new one and I got my fence fixed in 20 minutes. Anyone else find random free stuff at their library?

But isn't that just encouraging people to buy less and rely on the system more? Libraries are already stretched thin with books and computers, now they're expected to maintain power tools too. Next thing you know there's a waitlist for a weed whacker and nobody can find the latest bestseller.

My local library in Portland started this tool thing about two years ago and I was totally against it at first. I figured it would be a mess, like you're saying. But then I needed a post hole digger for a weekend project and didn't want to spend sixty bucks on something I'd use once. I walked in expecting chaos but it was organized fine, checked it out like a book. Honestly seeing more people come through the doors just to grab a hedge trimmer then wander over to the book section changed my mind. I still want my bestsellers available but if a weed whacker brings in a new family who discovers the kids story time, that's a win in my book.

Oh come on, libraries have been evolving past just books for decades. Tool rentals actually bring in more people who then discover all the other stuff libraries offer. A well-used impact driver does way more for the community than a dusty copy of a bestselling novel nobody has checked out in six months.
