Watched a 1987 apartment hallway go from orange shag to gray berber in 2 days, and now it echoes
Did a 12 unit hallway job over in Allentown last week. Old stuff was this burnt orange shag from the 80s, thick as a mattress, probably had 30 lbs of dust baked into it. Pulled it up and the padding was stuck to the slab like old tape. We laid new gray berber with a 6 lb pad and finished in two days flat.
Here is the funny part. The super walked the hall after we were done and just stood there. Said the whole place sounded like a library now. Turns out all that shag was eating every footstep and cough in that hallway. New low pile bounces sound off the walls. He asked me if we could put something on the ceiling to fix it. I told him that is a paint and drywall problem, not mine, but he wasn't laughing.
Anybody else run into a hallway that gets loud after a switch like that? What do you tell the building guy?
