I finally stopped hating cushioned underlayment for hardwood stairs
For 7 years I refused to put any padding under stair runners because I thought it made the carpet bunch up at the nose, but a job in Portland last month forced my hand when the homeowner insisted on 8mm pad. I ran it tight and tacked it every 4 inches and the transitions came out cleaner than any bare tackstrip job I've done. Has anyone else been wrong about a material combo for that long, or am I just stubborn?

My first job with 8mm under stair runners was a custom home in Tacoma back in 2019. Homeowner wanted it thick for the kids and I fought it the whole way, but I found that using a 1/2 inch wider runner and wrapping it tight over the nose before tacking fixed the bunching problem. Now I won't go back to the thin stuff on anything with a decent stair nose.
