Heard a kid say tack strips are ancient tech, made me feel old in 30 seconds
Got sent to help a new guy on a tear out over in Tacoma last Thursday. He's maybe 22, fresh out of the program, and while we're pulling up this nasty berber he goes 'why do we still nail wood strips down, why not just glue everything with that pressure tape stuff'. I just laughed and told him about the house I did back in 2003 where the homeowner wanted no tack strips by the sliding doors because her dog kept stepping on them. So I tried full glue down in that one hallway, no stretch, and by the following January there was a ripple you could trip over near the patio. Had to rip it and redo it with proper strips on a Saturday for half the original pay. I know new adhesives are better now, but pinning the edges and stretching still saves my back on 12 foot runs. That kid did ask a decent question though, made me think about how much of this trade is just habit passed down. Anyone else run into young installers questioning the basics and end up realizing they might have a point sometimes?
