Found a trick for seamless seams on patterned carpet after 12 years in the trade

Been installing for 12 years and always hated when patterned carpet seams didn't line up right. Last month I had a job for a customer in Bakersfield who wanted this big geometric pattern. I was dreading it. Then my helper mentioned he watched a video where a guy used a hot glue gun to tack the pattern in place before cutting. Tried it on that job - laid both pieces out, matched the pattern, put tiny dots of hot glue on the back every 6 inches to hold it still, then cut through both layers at once. Seam came out perfect. Saves me from pulling my hair out on the next pattern job. Anyone else got weird tricks for pattern matching?

Yeah, pattern matching on carpet is one of those things that can ruin your whole day if it goes wrong. That hot glue trick is genius, honestly. I've been doing this for about 8 years now and I always dread the geometric stuff too - had a kitchen job last spring where the pattern was these big diamonds and I swear I spent 45 minutes just lining up the first seam before I cut anything. Ended up using double-sided tape along the back edge to hold it in place before cutting through both layers, kind of the same idea as your glue dots. Sticky stuff that holds the pattern still is a lifesaver, no more sliding around when you're trying to make that cut.

My first pattern job was a nightmare. I spent like an hour on a big floral pattern in a master bedroom and it still shifted when I cut. That hot glue trick is pure gold. I usually grab a can of spray adhesive and give the back edges a quick tack. Keeps everything in place just like the glue dots. Had a client pick out a busy paisley pattern last month and I used that method. Seam turned out invisible. Wish I had thought of this years ago.
