Throwing out my old habit of skipping test fits revolutionized my trim carpentry.

I always thought test fitting trim was a waste of time, so I'd just cut and nail it up straight away. That led to so many frustrating gaps and mismatched miters that needed caulk or filler. Now, I force myself to dry-fit every piece, even the simple baseboards, before any adhesive or fasteners. Last month, on a window casing job, this caught a crown molding section that was bowed and would have looked terrible installed. I swapped it out preemptively, and the whole room came together perfectly with no touch-ups. Honestly, this little discipline has saved me hours of rework and made my finishes look custom every time.

My buddy learned this the hard way with interior doors last year. He got cocky and hung three without dry-fitting, then spent a weekend planing and shimming. Never skips it now, obviously.

Dry-fit every door, a practice that saved me hours, @piper_carter80.

Watched my cousin rush a closet door install without dry-fitting last month. He jammed it into the frame and split the side jamb clean in half. Honestly, he wasted a whole Saturday and like eighty bucks on a new pre-hung unit. Never skipping that step myself after helping him fix it.
