Found a weird way to get perfect 45s on a tricky miter cut
I was trimming out a bay window in an old house, and the angles were all off by a degree or two. My miter saw was set right, but the cuts kept coming up short. Out of frustration, I put a piece of masking tape on the fence where the blade hits and drew a line on it. Then I cut a scrap piece, checked the angle with my digital gauge, and nudged the saw until the cut line on the tape matched the gauge. It took about five minutes of fiddling, but the next cut was spot on. Has anyone else had to trick their saw into cutting right on an old job?

That tape trick is smart for a quick visual check. I've had to do something similar by shimming the workpiece with a business card to get the angle just right. It's crazy how a tiny bit of play in the saw can throw everything off.

Yeah, @jade_johnson, that business card shim is a solid move too. It's wild how those little fixes become second nature when you're fighting a saw that just won't stay put. My old miter saw had so much slop I was basically using feeler gauges as a regular part of setup. You get real good at those little hacks when a half degree error ruins a whole cut.

jesse_williams62 said "feeler gauges as a regular part of setup" and honestly that hits home. I've got this old miter saw from like 2010 that I swear has a mind of its own. One day it'll cut a perfect 45, next day I'm off by a full degree for no reason. I started doing what you did with the tape but I actually draw a little arrow on the tape pointing where the blade should hit. Then I take a scrap piece and do a test cut, see where the arrow lines up compared to the actual cut. Its basically like making your own alignment jig out of office supplies. The worst is when you think you've got it dialed in and then you cut your nice trim piece and its garbage. Had to quit fighting my saw and just accept that every job starts with a setup ritual now.
