An old timer told me to stop driving finish nails so deep into baseboard
He said the wood expands and contracts and you'll get those little dents showing through the paint after a season change. Has anyone else dealt with nail pops coming back after a few months?

Yeah but didn't you set them with a nail punch? Because if you didn't then the head is sitting right at the surface and that's gonna pop for sure no matter what you do. But even if you punch them a little deep, if the wood is still wet when you painted it'll shrink and the mud will crack anyway. What kind of baseboard material is it, MDF or real wood?

Is the baseboard mitered tight or did you leave a gap for the wood to move?

Punched em a little too deep once and the wood grew back like it was pissed off. @sandraflores has the right take though, if the baseboard is real wood and still had moisture in it you're just asking for trouble.
