Took a free online course and it backfired hard
I did a Google Data Analytics cert in 8 weeks. Thought it'd land me a job fast. Instead, 3 interviewers said I sounded like a textbook. Real-world problems? Totally blanked on them. Anyone else hit a wall after finishing a popular cert?

Those certs teach you how to pass their tests, not how to actually solve messy real world problems. Real companies care way more about you thinking on your feet than reciting definitions. Try building a tiny project from scratch next time, it forces you to deal with all the ugly stuff the course skipped over.

Exactly. And here's the thing nobody talks about with those certs - they make you think you understand something because you can spit back the right answers on a test. @williams.jenny I've seen people come in with a stack of certs who cant even set up a simple test environment when their laptop has a weird port issue. The cert teaches you the happy path. Real work is all the edge cases and broken dependencies and random config problems nobody warned you about. Building a project from zero forces you to debug all that garbage. It also teaches you that half the time the docs are wrong or outdated and you just have to figure it out.

Not sure it's that black and white. Plenty of people with certs land jobs and do fine, and plenty of people with projects still can't explain why their code broke.
