My uncle stored his Chevelle in a dirt floor barn for 11 months and the frame came out worse than a car that sat outside
Everyone in my family swears by indoor storage over a car cover in the driveway, but I watched the opposite play out with my own eyes. My uncle parked his 1970 Chevelle in his buddy's dirt floor barn in October and pulled it out the next September, and the frame rails had surface rust you could scrape with a fingernail. Meantime my neighbor's Camaro sat under a cheap $60 cover on asphalt all winter in the same town and his underside looked about the same, maybe even a little cleaner. The barn had no vapor barrier, so every warm day the concrete slab and dirt floor sweated moisture straight up into the car, and no air moved in there at all. Eleven months of that damp, still air did more damage than rain ever did, since rain at least dries off. I get why people think a roof equals protection, but a closed up shed with a wet floor is basically a slow cooker for rust. So what actually matters, keeping the car dry with airflow, or just keeping it out of the weather? I want to hear from anybody who has run a dehumidifier or a fan in their storage spot and seen a real difference.
