Bought a $12 headlamp at a gas station in Flagler after mine died, and it outlasted my $70 one
Three nights into a trip near Moab my fancy headlamp quit, so I grabbed the cheap one on a fuel stop and it just kept working. Anyone else find the throwaway gear holds up better than the stuff you research for weeks?
Watched a guy on YouTube test like 15 headlamps from Walmart and gas stations against the fancy ones, and a bunch of the cheap ones held up just as long or longer. His whole point was that past a certain price you're paying for brand name and fancy packaging, not actual brightness or battery life. I've had the same thing happen with pocket knives, lost a $90 one and the $15 gas station replacement is still in my glove box three years later. There's something to be said for gear you don't baby because you're not scared of losing it. When you treat a thing like it's disposable you just use it harder and it keeps going.
Remember my buddy Dave had a headlamp die on a night hike in Zion, so he bought a $10 one at a gas station in Springdale. That thing survived the rest of the trip, then two more seasons of camping, and when the plastic clip finally snapped he just taped it and kept going. He said the same thing you did, that he never worried about it because it was cheap, so he tossed it in his pack loose and never coddled it. The fancy one he babied lived in its own little case and still died first.
