Rant: spent 3 hours on a Nikon F3 last week that a shop in Denver 'fixed' two years ago
Got a customer's F3 in last week with a shutter that was capping at 1/1000, and when I pulled the base plate the screws were already chewed up, so I knew somebody had been in there. Turns out a shop out in Denver did a CLA on it about two years back, and whoever did the job had put the mirror box back with one shim missing and used way too much grease on the slow speed gear train. I spent 3 hours just cleaning out the old lube with cotton swabs and naphtha before I could even start the real work. What gets me is this used to be a job you'd hand off to the guy down the street who'd been doing it since the 70s, and now half the shops that took that kind of work are gone, so people ship stuff across the country to whoever answers the phone. I get it, parts are dry and nobody wants to train a new guy for 5 years, but it stings when a repair comes back worse than it went out. Anyway, the F3 is running clean at all speeds now and the customer picks it up Friday. Anybody else seeing more of these out of state repair jobs come through the door lately, or is it just my bench?
