Finally convinced old school CLA is worth the money
I've been repairing cameras for about 8 years now, mostly shop work. I always thought a full CLA on a common SLR like a Pentax K1000 was overkill. Just replace the light seals and move on, right? But last month I did a complete tear down on one for a customer in Portland who insisted. The difference in shutter accuracy and smoothness after cleaning the old grease was night and day. Has anyone else found that a full service is actually worth it on common bodies you normally just patch up?

Yeah I was totally with you on that until I did a full CLA on a K1000 last month. Now I get it, the difference is way bigger than I expected.

Did a full CLA on an old Spotmatic last year. Felt like a whole new camera afterwards. Shutter speeds were actually accurate for once, not just close enough.

Wait... you're telling me you actually did it on a K1000? The most basic, mass-produced SLR out there, and it actually made that much difference? I've got to admit I'm shocked because I've always figured those shutters were just good enough as-is, you know, not worth the effort. But if you're saying the accuracy after cleaning old grease is that obvious... man, maybe I've been missing out all these years. I always assumed a CLA on something that common was just a waste of time and money.
