An old timer told me to stop crimping F connectors with the cheap tool, and I finally get why
Was on a job in Mesa two weeks ago running drops in a 1970s ranch house, and the homeowner's brother was there, retired 30 years with the phone company. He watched me crimp a few F connectors with my $12 squeeze tool and just said, "you're crushing the dielectric, son." Didn't think much of it until he grabbed my meter and showed me the return loss on the last three fittings. Two of them were bad. I switched to a compression tool that afternoon, cost me about $40 at the supply house, and every fitting I checked after that read clean. Guess the old guy knew something. I'd been blaming the cheap coax for callbacks when the real problem was riding in my pouch the whole time. So now I'm wondering, how many of you run compression only, or is there a spot where crimping still makes sense on a service call?
