My mom said to put a slice of bread in the cookie jar to keep them soft, and now I have a petrified slice and crunchy cookies
She swore by this trick when I was a kid, so I dropped a piece of white bread in with a batch of chocolate chip cookies I baked on Sunday. Three days later the bread was hard as a rock and the cookies were somehow even more stale than the ones I left in a zip bag. I'm starting to think she was just messing with me, or maybe the bread trick only works in humid places and not my dry apartment in Reno. Has anyone actually had this work, or is it one of those kitchen myths that just gets passed down forever?
