Question about the check engine light that quit on its own after 3 days

My 2014 Corolla threw a check engine light last Tuesday on I-35 outside Waco, and I panicked and pulled into a Firestone worried about a $900 repair. The guy ran the code, cleared it, and told me it was just a loose gas cap, no charge. Light stayed off the whole drive home, but now every time I start the car I catch myself staring at that dash. Anyone else had a code disappear on its own and did it ever come back?
