TIL the hallway smoke test trick from a sparky at a Reno job

So I was walking through this 1970s apartment building in Portland last week, helping a buddy swap out some old ceiling fixtures. This electrician, maybe 60 years old, saw me struggling to trace where a junction box fed from. He just goes, 'shut the door, open the window, and light a match.' I thought he was messing with me. But he lit one, held it near the baseboard, and the smoke drifted straight toward a patch in the drywall. Turns out the box was buried behind that spot, some hack job from 1985. I never would have found it without him. For anyone who does remodels, how do you locate hidden boxes or lines when the blueprints are garbage? I usually end up drilling test holes and patching, which is a pain.
