My leveling laser lied to me for 3 weeks, foundation pour is now 2 inches off

I bought one of those green rotary lasers from the big box store back in March for a 14x20 shed slab. My father in law said the self leveling feature was junk but I figured it was fine. Spent every evening that week setting up forms and checking with that thing. Poured the concrete last Saturday. When I finally put a string line across it Monday, the far corner was 2 inches low. The laser was fine when I tested it in the garage. But the bracket on the tripod had a hairline crack, so it slowly drooped on me. Nobody warns you that cheap gear can fail halfway through a job, not just at the start. I'm going to tear out the forms approach and just put a self leveling overlay on the worst spot. My question is, has anyone else found that the tripod or mount is usually the weak link instead of the tool itself? I feel like an idiot for not double checking with a water level every pour.
